College Applications Start Long Before Senior Year
While senior year is when you will be putting together your college applications, the reality is, by the time you start your applications, most of it is already set in stone. Once senior year rolls around, there's not much you can do to change your grade point average, extra-curricular activities, and volunteer activities.  Depending on what your goals are, this can be either a good thing or a bad thing.

There is some good news if you take a look at what you have on your applications, and you're not happy with where you are. There are a few things you can do to put some extra power behind that application.  The two most important last-minute things you can do for your application are:

ACT/SAT Scores

If you don't have scores yet, you're going to need to take the test.  You may already have a score, but you think you can do better.  Either way, you can give your application a big boost with a solid score.  Unlike GPA, which is averaged over four years, your test score is set after one day. If you prepare for the test with an effective program, you can turn your test score into the highlight of your application.

College Essays

A lot of your college application is about the numbers, whether that be your GPA, ACT score, or number of clubs you belong to. You essays are a way for you to tell each school who you are. While the essays can be hard, think of them as an opportunity to tell each college why you are special. A well written, interesting essay  can be the deciding factor that can push your application into the 'accepted' pile.

There are certainly many more you can do to make you a strong applicant, but if you can do well on these, they will make a good cornerstone to build the rest of your application around.
